The value of planning before renovating

21 Sep 26

Some homes just need the right vision, planning and attention to detail to help them reach their full potential. This beautifully transformed 1950s solid brick home in Caulfield is a great example.

The owners had recently purchased the property but hadn't yet moved in, creating an opportunity to complete a renovation before turning the house into their family home. Rather than living through months of noise, dust and disruption, they were able to start fresh in a fully renovated space designed to suit their lifestyle from day one.

Common challenges

Renovating an older home often involves much more than updating finishes.

  • Hidden maintenance issues can quickly become obvious once renovation works begin.
  • Multiple areas of the home often need attention at the same time.
  • Balancing modern functionality with the original character of the property can be challenging.
  • Without a clear plan, renovation timelines and budgets can easily drift.

Project Works delivered a complete internal renovation, including a new kitchen, bathroom, powder room and laundry, along with painting, plaster repairs, and electrical and plumbing upgrades throughout the home.

The project also addressed key maintenance works, including roof repairs, re-pointing, gutter cleaning and general roof restoration. A standout feature was the restoration of the original timber floorboards, bringing warmth and character back to the home.

Completed in just eight weeks, the renovation transformed both the look and functionality of the property, allowing the owners to move straight into a fully refreshed home.

Practical takeaways

  • Completing renovations before moving in can save significant time, stress and disruption.
  • Address maintenance issues alongside cosmetic upgrades to protect your investment.
  • Preserve original features where possible to retain character and long-term appeal.
  • Careful project planning and coordination can significantly improve renovation efficiency and outcomes.

The Caulfield Renovation demonstrates how a well-planned transformation can modernise an older home while preserving the character that made it special in the first place.
